How’s My Driving? - Safe Driving Blog Tips

Budget safety scheme leading the way

When Ross Smith created How’s My Driving? 20 years ago, it was with greater communication creating safer roads as its founding principle. Today thousands of vehicles display the distinctive yellow and black insignia of safe and courteous driving.

But with the growth of technology and sophisticated surveillance systems is there still room for the humble bumper sticker in the struggle to keep our roads safe?

The answer? A resounding yes. Research shows that the presence of a bumper sticker inviting other road users to rate a drivers safety on the road sends a subliminal message; it highlights risk awareness in the mind of the driver encouraging him to consider how his driving affects other road users.

There is, of course, more to How’s My Driving? than the bumper sticker. Behind the scenes the scheme is supported by an online feedback system that allows road users to report incidents and helps organisations manage road risk. Companies who are part of the scheme receive quarterly reports which highlight trends and alert them to potential problems. Armed with this information, management can choose the most suitable intervention to combat any driving issues sure in the knowledge that the feedback received is independent.

With increasing amounts of traffic on the roads, driving is one of the toughest jobs in the world so it’s more important than ever to do everything we can to encourage those people that drive as part of their working day to drive economically and safely and to ingrain a culture of safety at company level.

Speaking today about the scheme, Ian McKay, Managing Director of How’s My Driving? said: “There are lots of ways to tackle this issue with drivers without alienating them and it is widely acknowledged that recognition for a job well done encourages safe behaviour, especially when it forms part of a well-established strategy for managing and reducing occupational road risk and improving staff morale. Together with dedicated safety managers How’s My Driving? can help you manage that risk.”
