5 easy ways to reduce your fleet insurance premiums

Fleet insurance isn’t often described as comprehensive, legal and affordable. If you are responsible for a fleet of vehicles, you will need to ensure all of your vehicles and drivers are protected whilst out on the roads and safeguarded.

If you are reading this then you want to know how to reduce those pricey premiums, so let’s get to it:

  • Regular risk assessments
One of the first steps in reducing your premiums is to ensure you are using all of your data to the best of your ability. Compile reports on any incidents that have taken place, the factors that may have caused them, common issues and how you have tackled these to reduce the risk going forward.

Risk assessments should also be carried out in-house regularly, monitoring driver performance can also make a difference in your premiums. You need to prove that you are managing your occupational road risk and you have a comprehensive road risk policy (MORR).

  • Keep your vehicles well maintained and safely stored
Depending on the shift pattern your driverswork, it’s important to consider where your vehicles will be stored when they are off the road as this can make a significant difference to your insurance premium. Work with your chosen provider to reduce the risk of vehicles being damaged or stolen, this may include trialling different storage/garage solutions.

  • Driver standards and training opportunities
It’s easy to say that good drivers cause fewer accidents – but of course it’s true and this in-turn will lead to lower insurance premiums, as you won’t be claiming. As covered above, your risk assessment will form part of your risk management measures to ensure you have the very best drivers and vehicles. Regular driving licence checks, CPD, training and skills such as customer service will improve your drivers skills behind the wheel and as an ambassador for your company.

Fleet management software provided by the How’s My Driving? service gives you the ability to spot any patterns, opportunities for training and compile trend reports to then provide bespoke CPD.How’s My Driving? have formed a relationship with Drive Alivewhich offers our members practical support with their employee driver development, CPD and compliance obligations.

We understand that if you have identified a driver needing some additional CPD training or support, it can be difficult to source who is best placed to give this training. Drive Alive have over 30 years of experience in fleet risk management and all of their driving courses are conducted by highly skilled former road traffic police officers.

  • Monitor your fleet
When it comes to monitoring your fleet via technology the options are endless, from dashboard cams to telematics. These options can be really useful in providing evidence of how your vehicles are being used on the road, which will expose safe driving, route planning and who was at fault in an incident.

Here at How’s My Driving? we offer a simple, yet effective solution to compliment your telematics and dashboard cam data. The service works by placing a badge on the back of each vehicle, it helps to remind the driver to concentrate on their driving style, whilst simultaneously, providing an alternative form of redress for other road users, diffusing situations that may lead to “road rage” incidents. The user-friendly reporting system allows managers to identify and target any training requirements for individual drivers, continuously raising the standard of driving on the UK roads which in turn will reduce the likelihood of collisions, and ultimately reducing insurance premiums.

  • Compare the whole market
The benefits of all your work will start to become apparent when you can illustrate that you are driving down your accident rate and managing your road risk. Before you renew your fleet insurance, take the time to gather the relevant information to demonstrate your fleet safety management plans and show the strategy you have put in place to manage your road risk. Then it’s time to shop around!
