Transport minister, Robert Goodwill, is said the Government are ‘reviewing’ a policy that will legally enforce a distance of at least one meter between vehicles and cyclists. Currently, the Highway Code only asks motorists to leave “plenty of room”.

On-the-stop fines of up to £5,000 could be handed out to careless motorists who drive too close to cyclists in order to help tackle road safety and hazardous driving practices in the UK.

Similar driving laws have already been enforced in Australia and other countries in Europe to protect their cyclists, requiring motorists to leave a minimum 1.5-meter gap.

The Department for Transport published the statistics that in 2015 cyclists were 17 times more likely to be killed on the road than those people travelling in vehicles. The question remains, could this really help save cyclists lives and how could it be enforced on a practical level?
