How’s My Driving? - Safe Driving Blog Tips
Are you one of a third of all drivers who keep their phones in their pockets whilst they drive? The increasing social pressure of staying in the loop means that more people are using their phones whilst driving, keeping us constantly connected to the internet, emails, calls and texts. Many studies have shown that a reason for this need for constant connection is from intense fear and anxiety of missing out, also known as ‘FOMO’ to the millennial generation.
In this modern day world our obsession with technology and staying connected intrudes not only on our social and work lives, but it’s also started to threaten our road safety. In 2015 alone there were more than 500 UK traffic incidents involving drivers using a phone behind the wheel. Texting while driving impairs driving performance in various ways: slows reaction time, causing inconsistent speed and decreasing concentration.
Aside from the danger and potentially fatal consequences, it is still illegal to use your mobile phone whilst driving. Don’t let that text message be your last, take precautions by turning your phone on silent, turning off your notifications and keeping your mobile out of sight.
